KeralaPolice installs 100 cameras - expects fine of 40 crore rupees in 2014

The Hi-Tech Traffic Enforcement Control System Inaugurated by Chief Minister of Kerala is going to take people for a ride... The integrated 24 hour control room is located at Thycaud, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala could  monitor 100 camera feeds. The camera could monitor and capture number plates of  over-speeding vehicles or vehicles making traffic violations even at night. There are 100 cameras along six different highway stretches. The stretches are
  • Kovalam-Kottiyam (NH)
  • Venjarammoodu-Chengannoor (SH)
  • Sakthikulangara-Ambalappuzha (NH)
  • Alappuzha-Changanassery (KSPTA)
  • Thrissur-Kuttippuram (SH/NH
  • Palakkad-Malappuram (SH)

The system was developed by Keltron for Rs.40 crores ( with help of some pvt. parties ??? ) . Keltron expect a fine collection of Rs.40 crores in 2014 itself. The Managing Director of Keltron, C. Prasanna Kumar told The Hindu that  Keltron would get the returns in 12 to 13 months from the revenue generated through the challans.

"From Monday 9PM to Tuesday 4pm,  2248 got fined adding Rs. 6.74 lakhs Rupees to government" reports Manorama newspaper.
If we do a quick analysis The daily average should be Rs. 11 lakhs to make Rs.40 crores in a year... So expect somewhere between 3500 to 4000 vehicles getting fined Rs.300 daily or expect the fine amount to be hiked to Rs. 1000 /-

The fine could be remitted through district payment collection centers in all districts. The Rs 300 fine should be remitted within 15 days, Rs 400 for next 10 days failing which the vehicle owner has to face court proceedings.

The fine amount can also be paid through the Kerala Police Department Online Payment System. All that is required is a debit/credit card and your vehicle number.

Windows Unzip sucks - Double Click to Unzip in Windows fails

If you have ever used a Mac OS, you could experience the difference between how a zip file gets uncompressed/unzipped.

In MacOS by default you double-click a zip file and the unzipped files gets created in the same folder - pretty easy and simple. The other advanced options come up if you right click which is not necessary 99 pct of times.

In Windows when you download a zip file and double click on it in the browser window (or in Explorer) we would like it to automatically open the unzip program, instead of letting us enter the directory. There is no option to change the default double-click action from 'open directory' to 'unzip if zipped'

In Windows you have to right click and hit 'Extract All', which brings up a dialog box asking too many questions where I want to extract to yada yada.  The easiest way is to right click and perform cumbersome tasks to get it unzipped/uncompressed. This is a big problem when you are using a laptop ( especially without a mouse ) . Millions of man hours are wasted in this process. It is sad to see that Microsoft has not imitated Apple on this task.

Here is a close solution. Visit ExtractNow.com and install it. Then select auto-uncompress files in watched folders. See images below.

How to buy 5kg LPG cylinder from petrol pumps?

How to buy 5kg LPG cylinder from petrol pumps? and at what price. These are the questions people have in their mind when news media reported that Sale of 5-kg LPG cylinders allowed at petrol pumps across India ( except election declared states ). Here are some of my predictions.

  1. This facility will be linked to a consumer card/id card.
  2. Cost of these cylinders will be very high since no subsidy will be given.
  3. Only company owned outlets will be selling these initially.( Prediction )
  4. Cost of 5 kg LPG cylinder will be Rs. 500. There will be a security deposit.
  5. This facility could help us if there is an urgent need .
  6. You could soon hear more accident reports. For example -   gas cylinder exploded inside vehicle.  Since people will be taking the  cylinder  in their private vehicle.
  7. This could serve as a rehearsal for upcoming rationing of diesel and petrol
